How Great: Chance The Rapper Wins 3 Grammys, Including History-Making Best Rap Album

VIDEO: Watch the Chicago hip-hop star perform live at Sunday's show after winning his first-ever Grammy awards.

Chance the Rapper earned his first-ever Grammy awards on Sunday, winning for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for the online streaming-only "Coloring Book."

Not only were the wins personal achievements for the Chicago rapper, two of them also were historic achievements for the Grammys, which broadcast its 59th annual ceremony Sunday, Feb. 12, from the Staples Center in Los Angeles:

  • His Best New Artist win — the first award announced during the telecast — marks the first time a black hip-hop artist has received that honor since Lauryn Hill won it in 1999.
  • Not only was "Coloring Book," Chance's 2016 mixtape that was released as an Apple Music exclusive, is the first streaming-only album to be nominated for and win a Grammy after the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which runs the music awards, changed its rules this year thanks to the album's success.

In his acceptance speech for Best New Artist, Chance, 23, thanked God for the win and gave a shout out to his hometown, as well.

"Glory to God!," he said before leaving the stage, after already ignoring the show's early walk-off music and telling the audience he would keep talking. "I claim the victory in the name of the Lord! Let's go!"

Chance's win for Best Rap Performance for "No Problems" with 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne was announced along with other awards shortly before Sunday's broadcast.
