Chicago: 5 Fun Things to Do Over Labor Day Weekend
Chicagoans will celebrate the end of summer with numerous Labor Day weekend events. Here are the best five.
CHICAGO, IL - The unofficial end of summer is upon us, but the fun keeps going in Chicago. Here’s what to do over the last warm three-day weekend of the year.
African Festival of the Arts: The yearly Labor Day weekend event in Washington Park features a simulated African village. Interactive engagements, vibrant drumming and a collection of artifacts add to the festive atmosphere, according to the event page. Sections of the park will be dedicated to fine art, film and video and the making and collecting of black dolls.
Chicago Fringe Festival: Talent, lots of talent. Check out some of the best unknown acts in the nation at this 10-day festival spread out throughout the city, with several of the performances planned for venues on the always-hip Lawrence Avenue.

Chicago Jazz Festival: When you think of music in Chicago, jazz comes to mind first. The annual, free Chicago Jazz Festival began Thursday and runs through Sunday at the Chicago Cultural Center at Millennium Park. Soul Ligration (Thursday), Oliver Lake (Friday) and The Bad Plus (Saturday) will be among the headline acts.
2016 AVP Championships: Oak Street Beach is the place to be to take in some sun, waves and this weekend, competitive volleyball. The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will make its stop at the North Side beach from Sept. 1-4 with both men’s and women’s contests.
