Chicago Area Sees Steep Drop In Temps; Rain And More Rain This Week

A look at the weather forecast for the week ahead.

Temperatures are expected to see a 20-degree drop from Sunday morning to early Monday as it finally starts to feel like fall. Temps hovered near 70 degrees late Sunday morning in Chicago, according to the National Weather Service. By 5 p.m., those temps are forecast to be around 59 degrees before dropping down to 50 degrees by 2 a.m. on Monday.


Meanwhile, it was a rainy Sunday. Light to moderate rain will continue through the night across most of the Chicago area, which could lead to wet roads and lower visibility, according to the National Weather Service. Eastern locations, including parts of Chicago, are likely to see some rain linger into Monday morning. In addition, gusty wind gusts are expected for the area, especially along Lake Michigan.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, there is a periodic chance for rain showers as well.

A stronger cold front will move across the area Monday afternoon into Monday evening. This front will bring much cooler air into the region with highs Tuesday and Wednesday only around 50.

Partly cloudy skies and high temps between 57 and 63 degrees are in the forecast on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Here is a more detailed look at the weather forecast for the week ahead:

  • Sunday Afternoon: Rain. Steady temperature around 54. North northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Sunday Night: Rain, mainly before 11 p.m. Low around 49. North northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Monday: A 20 percent chance of rain before 10 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. North wind around 5 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
  • Monday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. West northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Tuesday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 49. West northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
  • Tuesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.
  • Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 48.
  • Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 56.
  • Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43.
  • Friday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 53.
  • Friday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.
  • Saturday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 47.
