Chicago-Area Weather: More Storms / Recent Rainfall Totals / Cooler Temps On Way

A look at the weather forecast for the coming week.

ALGONQUIN, IL -- Hail, gusty winds and brief heavy downpours are possible Sunday afternoon for far northern Illinois. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued through 5:45 p.m. for northeastern Will, east central Kane, southeastern DuPage and central Cook counties. The storms could bring 60 mph wind gusts, quarter-sized hail and wind damage to roof, siding and trees.

The higher coverage of storms is anticipated to be along and east of Interstate 55. The storms are expected to move southeast through late Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms come at a time when a flood warning remains in effect for the Des Plaines River near Russell, near Gurnee, in Lincolnshire, near Des Plaines and in Riverside. The Fox River in Algonquin and in Montgomery also remain under a flood warning.

Colder Temperatures in Forecast This Week

A cold front will swing south Sunday night and bring a change in air mass, according to the National Weather Service. Dryer air and cooler temperatures are expected this week. The weather should be less muggy and temps in the 70s is expected on Monday and highs between 76 and 83 are in the forecast for Tuesday.

Here is a more detailed look at the forecast for the Chicago area for the rest of the week:

  • Rest Of Sunday: Partly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2 pm. Highs in the mid 80s. West winds 5 to 10 mph late in the morning shifting to the north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation 40 percent.
  • Sunday Night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 60s. North winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Monday: Partly sunny. Highs in the mid 70s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.
  • Monday Night: Mostly clear in the evening then becoming partly cloudy. Lows in the lower 60s in the suburbs...but in the mid 60s downtown. East winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 80s inland...but only in the upper 70s near the lake. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Tuesday Night: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 60s in the suburbs...but in the upper 60s downtown.
  • Wednesday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 80s.
  • Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then showers and thunderstorms likely after midnight. Lows in the lower 70s. Chance of precipitation 60 percent.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs around 80.
  • Thursday Night Through Saturday: Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 60s in the suburbs...but in the upper 60s downtown. Highs in the lower 80s.
