Chicago-Area Weather: Solar Eclipse Forecast; Severe Storms Possible

A look at the weather forecast for the week ahead.

Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast Monday, which could block viewing chances of the solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 11:54 a.m. on Monday and go through 2:42 p.m. with the maximum eclipse for the Chicago area happening at 1:19 p.m. There is also a 30 percent chance for rain, according to the National Weather Service.

For the rest of the night on Sunday, isolated showers are in the forecast. A couple isolated thunderstorms are also in the forecast for later this evening.

Besides the cloudy weather and possibility for rain, hot and humid weather is in the forecast. High temps between 84 and 89 degrees are expected. On Monday evening and night, the Chicago area could see strong to severe storms.

On Tuesday, high temps between 78 and 81 degrees are expected, according to the National Weather Service. Isolated thunderstorms are possible earlier in the day on Tuesday but should clear out by the afternoon.

Toward mid-week, cooler temps are in the forecast. High temps between 71 and 77 degrees are expected Wednesday while highs between 69 and 76 degrees are in the forecast for Thursday.

Here is more detailed look at the forecast for the week ahead:

  • SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the lower 70s. South winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • MONDAY: Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the upper 80s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
  • MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then showers and thunderstorms likely after midnight. Lows in the lower 70s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
  • TUESDAY: Cloudy with showers likely and a chance of thunderstorms in the morning, then partly sunny with chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. highs around 80. West winds 10 to 15 mph in the morning becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation 60 percent.
  • TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows in the upper 50s in the suburbs... But in the lower 60s downtown. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
  • WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 70s.
  • WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows in the upper 50s.
  • THURSDAY: Partly cloudy in the morning then clearing. Highs in the lower 70s.
  • THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 50s in the suburbs...but around 60 downtown. Highs in the mid 70s.
