Chicago Chefs Named To James Beard List Of 20 'Chefs To Watch'
Twenty chefs will headline events in their hometowns as part of the foundation's Taste America culinary tour, which begins later this year.

CHICAGO, IL — Chefs Zubair Mohajir and Rishi Kumar of Mirra and Mariela were recognized on the James Beard Foundation’s 2026-27 TasteTwenty chefs, a national group of culinary professionals recognized as “ones to watch” in the independent restaurant industry.
The 20 chefs will headline events in their hometowns as part of the foundation’s Taste America culinary tour, which begins Sept. 16 in New Orleans and continues in cities across the country through March 2027.
The foundation said the chefs were selected not only for culinary talent but also for their work beyond the kitchen, including efforts such as supporting sustainable agriculture, investing in restaurant teams, elevating quality ingredients and advocating for a stronger food system.

The chefs behind both Mirra and Mariela have been recognized for their skill and leadership abilities, including as semifinalists in this year's James Beard Awards. Mirra specifically has been recognized as being one of the best places to eat in Illinois and serving some of the best dishes in the U.S.
Critics lauded Mirra's Chaas Aquacile dish for it perfect blending of both Mexican and Indian flavors to create something uniquely delicious.
Mirra also supports local organizations and food initiatives to strengthen its connection to the community. Some organizations the restaurant supports include No Kid Hungry, Green City Market, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, World Central Kitchen and Pilot Light.
The national Taste America series comes to Chicago in March 2027.
