Chicago Cop Stripped of Police Powers After Fatal Off-Duty Shooting
An unnamed CPD officer is accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man Monday in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood.

CHICAGO, IL — An off-duty Chicago cop accused of fatally shooting an unarmed man he allegedly had recently been arguing with Monday was stripped of his police powers Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson handed down this measure against the unnamed 57-year-old transit detail officer despite the shooting still being investigated by the department and the Independent Police Review Authority, the report stated. The officer will still be paid as part of department policy, the report added.
Jose Nieves, 39, was allegedly shot by the officer at around 9:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, in the 2500 block of North Lowell Avenue in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood. Nieves, who was unarmed, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Centere, where he was pronounced dead.
