Chicago Firefighter Dies Days After Being Injured Fighting Fire

CHICAGO — A Chicago firefighter died Tuesday afternoon from injuries he sustained last week fighting a fire on Chicago’s Northwest Side. The firefighter, identified as MaShawn Plummer, 30, was being treated at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Plummer joined the Chicago Fire Department last December and had just celebrated his first anniversary, CFD spokesman Larry Langford said on Twitter. Plummer was also an EMT.

Just after 2 a.m. Dec. 16, a fire broke out in the basement of a two-story apartment building in the 3100 block of North Marmora Avenue in Belmont Central. One person died in the fire, and two others were injured, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

Plummer was first brought to Community First Hospital. He was eventually transferred in critical condition to Loyola Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries Tuesday afternoon.

The fallen firefighter leaves his parents and four sisters. Plummer’s body was taken in an honorary procession to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
