Chicago Firefighter Dies After Falling Through Floor While Battling Blaze In Rogers Park

The 33-year-old firefighter had suffered burns over 90 percent of his body while battling an apartment building fire in Rogers Park.

CHICAGO—A 33-year-old firefighter who was gravely injured Monday fighting a fire at an apartment building in the North Side Rogers Park neighborhood has died, according to multiple reports.

The Chicago Fire Department identified the fallen firefighter as CFD EMT Mike Altman. He was assigned to Truck 47 in Edgewater. Altman has two years with the fire department.

The fire happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of West North Shore Avenue in Rogers Park, officials said.

During a primary search, fire officials said Altman fell through the floor into a room that was fully on fire. He suffered burns over more than 90 percent of his body. Altman was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Yard Foundation, a fee-free crowdfunding platform by firefighters for firefighters, is accepting donations for the fallen firefighter, who was married with a young child at home and another baby on the way.
