Chicago Police Force Receives More Than 10000 Applications

As the deadline fast approaches, thousands are applying to become Chicago cops.

CHICAGO, IL -- The Chicago Police Department held a news conference Sunday to remind the community about the Monday midnight deadline for applications. So far, about 10,000 applications have been turned in. The official exam will be held in December.

According to officials, nearly half the applicants are CPS graduates, 10 percent are military veterans, and about 77 percent identified as minorities.

Chicago Police plan to hire between 85 to 100 positions each month until the end of next year: 516 police officers, 200 detectives, 112 sergeants, 50 lieutenants, and 92 field training officers.

Starting pay for police officers is $48,078, and is raised to $72,510 after a year and a half.

Applicants must be 21 at the time of hire and have valid ID. The exam will be held Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 at McCormick Place.
