Chicago Schools Cancel Classes, Activities Tuesday Amid Bitter Wind Chill

With predicted wind chills as low as -40 degrees, the district said it would be unsafe for children and staff to travel to school.

CHICAGO, IL — With dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills persisting, Chicago Public Schools has cancelled all classes and after-school activities on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The school district made an announcement Monday, saying that student and staff safety were paramount in this decision to close schools and cancel after-school programming (including sports practices and games).

A wind chill warning remains in effect until noon CST Tuesday, with wind chills as low as 25 to 40 degrees below zero. A wind chill advisory is then in effect from noon Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday, with wind chills as low as 15 to 30 below zero.

These dangerously cold conditions could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

There will be no remote learning for Chicago Public Schools students Tuesday, district officials added.

" The forecast shows temperatures warming by Wednesday, so we expect that classes will resume for all students on Jan. 17," officials added.
