Chicago Unveils Municipal ID 'CityKey' Cards

The new "CityKey" cards will be available for $10 starting in March.

CHICAGO, IL — The city has announced that a new municipal identification card will be available next year for undocumented immigrants and others living in Chicago. The new card is called "CityKey." The first 100,000 cards will be free, the city announced Thursday.

The cards will cost $10 for adults and $5 for those under age 17. Seniors can receive the card free of charge.

“If you live in Chicago, we want you to be a part of Chicago,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel stated in a media release. “This ID breaks down barriers to city services and brings every resident into the fold, regardless of immigration status, gender identification or housing status.”

The city said community groups will test the card throughout the first quarter of 2018 to ensure security and its full-integration. Local organizations said they hope the card's ease of access will also help the homeless and people with disabilities.
