Chuy Garcia Denounces Trump in Tuesday Protest

"People can only move forward when we respect each other," the Cook County Board Commissioner told a crowd outside Trump Tower.

Chicago, IL - A few dozen people gathered outside Trump Tower Tuesday morning in protest of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s fundraising event.

Among them was Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, a Chicago native who gained notoriety in 2015 when as a Democratic challenger he forced incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel into a primary runoff election.

Garcia was among several speakers to denounce Trump’s “divisive” campaign, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Nereida Moreno, who captured a video of Garcia’s speech on Twitter.

“I want to be here to lend my voice and lend my energy to all people across the country who say we cannot afford to have a commander-in-chief that wants to separate people by building walls and degrading certain people for political and monetary gain,” Garcia told a crowd of about 35.

The Cook County Board Commissioner and alum of St. Rita High School called Chicago a “welcoming” place and Illinois “a great state” because “we recognize we are each other’s keeper.”
