Cold Causes More Than 1,700 Flight Cancellations

All South Shore Line service was canceled Thursday, and most Amtrak and Metra lines have been halted.

CHICAGO — Many public transit and flight cancellations continue throughout the Chicago area and Illinois as of Thursday morning, due to the frigid weather. With wind chills as low as minus 50, Amtrak, South Shore and Metra Electric service was halted Wednesday morning.

At O'Hare and Midway airports, more than 1,700 flights have been canceled.

Flights to and from Chicago have been cancelled by airlines operating at Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal (CIRA) and Peoria International Airport.

Amtrak trains to and from Chicago were canceled Wednesday, and the majority of lines running Thursday have been canceled. Trains that originated on or before Tuesday, Jan. 29 will complete their trips to Chicago, however.

Metra reduced its service for Wednesday and Thursday. Altered schedules can be found here.

The South Shore Line, which is powered by electricity, also halted service Wednesday after wire problems were discovered. Crews are working to fix the problems, and the agency has announced that all service has been canceled for Thursday. Updates can be found here.
