Concert Review: ’90s Rock Royalty Lights Up Ravinia on a Sultry Summer Night

Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms & Spin Doctors deliver nostalgia and musical firepower in Highland Park

Highland Park, IL — July 26, 2025

On a warm, muggy night under the canopy of Ravinia’s historic trees, a sold-out crowd gathered to relive the glory days of ’90s alternative and jam rock. What followed was a high-energy, feel-good triple bill featuring Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, and headliners Blues Traveler—a lineup that proved the era’s music is not just surviving but thriving.

Spin Doctors opened the evening with an infectious blend of funk-infused rock. Frontman Chris Barron charmed the crowd with playful stage banter and high-kicks, while Eric Schenkman’s guitar solos sizzled. “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” ignited early singalongs, but it was a blistering, extended version of “Jimmy Olsen's Blues” that truly showcased the band’s tight musicianship and improvisational flair.

Gin Blossoms followed with a polished and emotional set, delivering jangly pop hooks that defined a generation. “Hey Jealousy” had the entire Pavilion and lawn in full voice. Their set leaned heavily into nostalgia while showcasing surprising depth from deep cuts like “Miss Disarray” and “Until I Fall Away”. The band’s chemistry and effortless melodies made their set feel both nostalgic and timeless.

Blues Traveler closed the night with their signature blend of blues, rock, and jam. John Popper’s harmonica wizardry was on full display from the opening track, and the crowd surged with energy during “Run-Around.” One of the night’s most memorable moments came during “The Mountains Win Again,” as guitarist Chan Kinchla delivered a soaring solo that earned a standing ovation. The band surprised fans by closing with a thundering cover of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher,” pushing the boundaries of their genre and lighting up the lawn with excitement. Their improvisational interplay— organ, bass, and drums weaving spirited solos—showcased a band still exploring and evolving even decades into their career.
