At Least 9 People Hurt During Cook County Jail Fights

UPDATED: A jail officer and 8 inmates were hurt and hospitalized during the incident Tuesday night.

CHICAGO, IL — At least one correctional officer and eight inmates were hurt during fights that broke out Tuesday night in the maximum security area at the Cook County Jail, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Jail officials said the injuries people received did not appear to be serious, and no inmates escaped during the altercations, the report stated.

Several ambulances were called to the jail at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in response to the fights in Division 9, the maximum security area, according to Sam Unger of WGN News. Authorities told the Tribune that the emergency units were brought in to take care of the stabbing victims, as well as possible battery victims, from the fights at the facility in the 2700 block of South California Avenue.

During one of the brawls, a correctional deputy was struck with a food tray that one of the inmates hurled.

The injured individuals were taken to Stroger, Saint Anthony and other area hospitals, the Tribune reports. One guard was hit by a food tray thrown by an inmate, the report added. Other people hurt during the incident also were treated at medical facilities at the jail, according to another Tribune report.

There was no information yet about what caused the fight. As of 10 p.m., the streets around the facility were still blocked, the Tribune reports.
