Cook County Jail Inmates Clap For Accused Cop Killer: Video

CHICAGO, IL — Several jail inmates applauded when the man accused of killing Chicago Police Cmdr. Paul Bauer was escorted past their holding cell on Thursday. The act was captured on surveillance video, which shows more than 20 inmates in the cell at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse. Guards were escorting accused gunman Shomari Legghette from his court hearing when the clapping broke out.

Cook County Jail officials said the video will be sent to the state's attorney so it can be considered in the inmates' potential sentencing. The Cook County Sheriff's Office called the clapping "disgraceful and despicable" and confirmed the inmates are being transferred to other jails outside Cook County.

A judge ordered Legghette held without bail Thursday during the hearing. Prosecutors said Legghette, 44, drew a 9mm handgun and shot Bauer multiple times outside the Thompson Center Tuesday, after Bauer tried to stop him from getting away.

Legghette was charged with first-degree murder of a peace officer and armed violence in the fatal shooting, as well as unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and possession of a controlled substance.

Bauer, 53, was a 31-year veteran of the force who had served in a variety of roles across the Chicago Police Department. He is survived by his wife, who works at the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and his 13-year-old daughter.

Bauer's wake is scheduled for Friday afternoon and his funeral will be held Saturday morning.
