CPS to Allow Transgender Students to Use Bathroom of Their Gender Identity
The school system set a list of guidelines on Monday.

CHICAGO, IL - Transgender students and staff at Chicago Public Schools will now be able to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity.
CPS released a set of guidelines this week that clarify “transgender or gender non-conforming adults have the right to discuss their gender identity or keep that information private,” according to a school statement.
“The guidelines released today will help ensure every student and adult in the CPS family can participate in an environment of complete tolerance and respect,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “CPS, like much of the country, has become far more aware of the needs and experiences of the transgender community, and it’s crucial for CPS guidelines to reflect our commitment to promoting safe and inclusive schools. These guidelines build on our commitment to fostering healthy and supportive learning opportunities across the District so that each of our students can reach their full potential.”
CPS consulted with several agencies, including the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health and Lurie Children’s Gender and Sex Development Program, to come up with the guidelines, which also protect transgender employees at CPS.
Included in the guidelines is a law that co-workers are not allowed to disclose information on another’s gender identity. A student administrative support team will be equipped at every school to develop confidential support plans “for each student to ensure they receive the resources and supports they need to be successful members of the school community.”
