Disgraced Police Commander, Who Tortured Hundreds, Dead at 70
Former Chicago police commander Jon Burge, who was convicted of lying about torturing victims into false confessions, has died.

CHICAGO, IL — Jon Burge, the former Chicago PD commander convicted in 2010 of lying about torturing suspects, has died, reports say. He was 70.
FOX32 reports that Former Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President Dean Angelo said he learned of the former commander's death Wednesday.
The city paid out millions amid lawsuits over torture, reports say. Eric Caine, who was exonerated in 2011 after serving 25 years in prison for murders he didn't commit, got $10 million. He was later accused of violent felony charges.

FOX32 reports Burge was convicted of lying about the torture, having been accused of torturing hundreds of black suspects by use of cattle prodder or suffocation by plastic.

In efforts to stop the immense pain and suffering, many of the torture victims gave false confessions to crimes.
According to FOX32, the reparations package for torture victims passed by Chicago City Council included a $5.5 million settlement and for the police department's history of torture to be taught in history classes.
