CHICAGO, IL — An elderly chihuahua is recovering from surgery after he was stabbed repeatedly on a walk in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood, according to authorities.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon, when 12-year-old Bebe the dog was out with his family in the 6600 block of West Irving Park Road, police said. Jeanette Olivo, 61, of Chicago, approached Bebe and stabbed him, according to police, who said Olivo was detained by Bebe’s owner, a 41-year-old man, and taken into custody.

Immediately following the attack, a 15-year-old girl in Bebe’s family punched Olivo in the face and kicked her, before fleeing, according to NBC 5 Chicago, which reported Olivo used a kitchen knife to hurt the dog.

Bebe suffered multiple stab wounds, including one that damaged his diaphragm, but he underwent surgery and was on the mend Wednesday, according to Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation, a nonprofit organization collecting donations to help pay for Bebe’s medical costs.

“Bebe has been with this family since he was a puppy,” the foundation said in a Facebook post. “His family is devastated and his human sister is in shock.”

Bebe was recuperating at home Wednesday, according to his owner, who confirmed the senior dog was expected to make a full recovery.

Olivo was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and aggravated use of a deadly weapon, a misdemeanor, according to police. About a year ago, Olivo was arrested in the Nashville area after she walked into a restaurant and told the manager she had a bomb and would kill everyone at the business, WKRN reported.
