Eddie Johnson Named Chicago's Top Cop

The interim part has been removed from the 27-year Chicago Police Department's title.

CHICAGO, IL - Interim Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson no longer holds the interim tag.

He’s the city’s new permanent police chief.

The Chicago City Council unanimously voted Wednesday to remove the interim tag from Johnson, according to the Chicago Tribune. He was selected by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to serve in the interim post. The city has been without a permanent police chief since Garry McCarthy was fired last year in the wake of the LaQuan McDonald shooting controversy.

Emanuel selected Johnson as the interim boss and pushed him for the full-time gig even though the city’s Police Board nominated three others to the post. Johnson initially hadn’t even applied for the job.

On a day when all aldermen were present, there was no voice opposing the appointment.

"The city is clearly in need of healing, and I believe Supt. Eddie Johnson is the person to do that," said 46th Ward Ald. James Cappleman said.

Johnson is a 27-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department.
