Ensure Your Child Reads Enough This Summer With These 3 Tips
Avoid the "summer slide" and practice these tips to help your children's mind stay active and alert!

Summer learning loss is a problem that affects children from families of all races and income levels. Students fall behind academically — up to 2-3 months of reading and math skills — if they aren’t exposed to engaging activities during school breaks.
In a recent summer reading report by Scholastic Books, only 48% of parents were aware of the “summer slide,” with 21% of children from low-income families never reading a single book from June to August.
Survey results from parents of children ages 6-17 show the 3 best ways to make sure children pick up a book this summer:
- 66% of parents with children ages 6-11 said going to the library was the #1 reason their children read at all during the summer
- More than half of participating parents said allowing their children to pick their own books helped get them excited about reading
- 56% reported that packing books for road trips and flights kept their children entertained and engaged
