Facebook, Google Planning To Expand Chicago Offices

Reports say Facebook and Google plan to increase space in high-scale Chicago office locations.

CHICAGO, IL — Two tech giants are discussing expanding their company's presence in Chicago within two well-known downtown office buildings. Google and Facebook's possible downtown expansions would help fill millions of square feet of new office space, according to Chicago Tribune.

Facebook is finalizing a deal at 151 N. Franklin St. and reports say Google is working on a deal to add space at a building under construction in the Fulton Market District at 210 N. Carpenter St.

The more than 200,000 square feet Facebook hopes to add on to the Franklin St. location follows the company's recent hiring of more than six dozen recruiters since last fall, in addition to more than 100,000 square feet of new space at 191 N. Wacker Drive, Crain's reports.

Google's expansion in Fulton Market would come as the California-based company has more than 900 employees in its Chicago office, as Crain's reports that Google was considering Chicago and other markets for a new operations center for up to 5,000 employees.

Google's idea to expand stems from the company wanting to attract talent from Big Ten universities in the Midwest, as well as trying to lure potential employees who want to live in or around a large urban area but don't want to deal with the high cost of living on the West Coast.
