How Cold Did It Get In IL? First Sub-Zero Temps Of 2022 Hit

ILLINOIS — Chicago had its first sub-zero temperatures of the season, with a low temperature of -1 on Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. And that doesn't even take wind chill into effect, as some areas saw wind chills colder than -20 degrees.

The weather service said the last time the temperature was below zero in Chicago was on Feb. 14, 2021, when it was -5 degrees.

Chicago wasn't the only city that had below-zero temperatures Friday morning, according to the weather service. At 5:30 a.m. Friday, sub-zero temperatures were also recorded in:

• DeKalb, -6
• Joliet, -1
• Rochelle, -6
• Romeoville, -3
• Sugar Grove, -4
• Kankakee, -2
• Rockford, -4
• West Chicago, -3

Wind chills were even lower, and many communities had wind chill values of -10 and lower. At 5:30 a.m. Friday, Midway had a wind chill of -15, DeKalb was -23, Joliet was -13, O'Hare was -14 and Romeoville was -17.

After the very cold temperatures on Friday, a milder Saturday is expected, but temperatures will fall again on Sunday, according to the weather service. Saturday will have a high of 34, and a wintry mix of freezing rain and snow is possible on Saturday night.

Sunday will have a high of 34 during the day, but temperatures will fall after noon, and the low on Sunday night is -1, according to the weather service.
