Former Chicago Blackhawks Goalie Dies In Drowning Incident

​Ray Emery died Sunday on Lake Ontario, police confirmed.

HAMILTON, ONTARIO — A former Chicago Blackhawks player died in a drowning accident Sunday on Lake Ontario. Police confirmed former goaltender Ray Emery, 35, drowned while swimming in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, located on Lake Ontario.

The former goalie was reported missing just after 6 a.m. His body was recovered just before 3 p.m. near where he was last seen, police in Hamilton said.

His cause of death will be confirmed following an autopsy, police said.

Emery, whose aggressive playing style earned him the nickname "Razor" from fans, played 11 seasons in the NHL, including with the Blackhawks, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks.

Emery joined the Blackhawks in 2011 and was a backup for the team when it took home the Stanley Cup in 2013.

The Chicago Blackhawks issued a statement saying the team was deeply saddened to learn of Emery's death, calling him a "fierce competitor, a good teammate and a Stanley Cup champion."
