‘He’s Stabbing Him:’ Video Shows Inmate Takeover of Cook County Jail
Watch the inmates flee from flash explosion as Cook County correctional officers storm housing tier during hostage incident.

CHICAGO, IL -- Officials named the two detainees who they allege took control of a housing tier at Cook County Jail and injured another detainee during a three-hour standoff with correctional officers on Thursday.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart identified the hostage-takers as 24-year-old Martin Alvarado and 27-year-old Cordarryl Stevenson. Alvarado has been incarcerated at Cook County Jail since April 2015, where is awaiting trial on a murder rap that took place in Cicero. Stevenson has been held at the jail since September 2014 stemming from armed robbery and vehicular hijacking charges in Skokie.
The injured detainee was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for what appeared to be minor injuries. A weapon was recovered at the scene. The sheriff’s office also released video clips of the incidents.
The incident unfolded around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, when the two Division 10 inmates covered the floor of their tier with soapy water. Alvarado and Stevenson then covered the fixed security cameras before ripping the cameras out entirely, according to a statement issued by the sheriff’s office.
Video clips released by the sheriff’s office on Friday show the detainees sitting quietly on metal benches between the cells on opposite sides of the tier. Another unidentified inmate is talking to corrections officers standing on the other side of a glass door.

In the second video clip, a corrections officer’s voice can be heard saying, “he’s stabbing him again. He’s stabbing him in the right leg.”
Another corrections officer starts yelling, “Why are you doing that? Why are you doing that?”
A few seconds later, the emergency response team opens the door into the tier and flash-explosion is fired. The inmates dive for cover on the floor as corrections officers wearing riot gear storm the housing tier and take control of Alvarado and Stevenson.

A statement from the sheriff's office said that Alvarado was charged with battering another detainee in June.
Stevenson was charged with aggravated battery after punching a peace officer in October 2014 and again in July 2015
In May, Stevenson was charged with disarming a peace officer.
A criminal investigation is ongoing and additional criminal charges are expected against both detainees.
