Marcia Hirsch took this photo of a heron, who she said was standing on the thin ice on the small pond. The bird then took off right at her as she was standing on her balcony, overlooking the back of the Willow Hill Golf Course in Northbrook.

Barb Baxter, of Manteno, sent us this photo she took of her 4-year-old pitbull, Theo. She said he was a shelter dog that spent his first 15 months of life in a cage. He likes getting dressed up and has turned out to be a very valuable member of our family.
