Hour-by-Hour Look At Today's Rising Temps For Chicago Area

Plus, a look at just how hot it got yesterday throughout the Chicago area.

If you want to find some reprieve from the heat today, head toward the lakefront. The city of Chicago and towns located along Lake Michigan will see high temperatures that are nearly 20 degrees cooler than many inland towns during the peak of the heat Tuesday. In addition, the lakefront "breeze boundary" and an overall unstable air mass will likely cause afternoon thunderstorms to develop — some of which could bring very gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.

The Chicago area is on its fourth day of extreme heat, which peaked yesterday with the city hitting a high of 95 degrees — a temperature it hasn't reached since Sept. 10, 2013. Today, the heat and mugginess will continue for many inland towns. Those hardest hit by the heat will see high temps in the mid-90s and heat index values inching toward 100.

The hot and humid conditions will continue Wednesday, with heat index readings near 100. In addition, an approaching weather system will likely bring more storms into the area later Wednesday afternoon into the night. Some of the storms will bring a wind and hail risk.

Because of the high temperatures forecast for Tuesday, the Illinois Partners for Clean Air and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency have issued an Air Pollution Action Day Alert. That alert means current weather conditions and air quality monitoring data indicate air pollution levels could be elevated and pose a potential health hazard to children, the elderly and individuals with pulmonary or respiratory disorders, such as asthma. People in those groups should take precautions during the alert. Chicago-area businesses and residents also are urged to reduce their contributions to air pollution.
