Here Are IL Snowfall Totals As Chicago Area Braces For More Snow

A period of accumulating snow is possible once again Wednesday night for some in the Chicago area.

ILLINOIS — More than 2 inches of snow fell at the National Weather Service Chicago's office in Romeoville on Tuesday, the highest recorded snowfall in the Chicago area. Meanwhile, Rockford Airport saw 1.9 inches of snow, Midway Airport had 1.6 inches, and O'Hare International Airport got 1.5 inches of snow, the weather service said.

The snow at O'Hare ended Chicago's 287-day snowless streak, according to the weather service. The last measurable snow was in March.

But with the streak broken, more snow is headed our way. A period of accumulating snow is possible once again Wednesday night for some in the Chicago area, the weather service said. Light snow will develop across parts of northern Illinois after 6 p.m. Wednesday, and then end from northwest to southeast after midnight, according to the weather service.

Most areas won't see more than a half-inch of snow, narrow bands of accumulating snow could result in localized snow amounts of an inch to a couple inches, the weather service said.

Freezing rain and a minor glazing of ice accumulation is also possible, especially south of Interstate 80, the weather service said.

A winter storm, with the potential for several inches of snow, may also hit the area on New Year's Day, according to the weather service. The track of the storm is still in question, but travel impacts are increasingly likely, the weather service said.

Colder air, with subzero wind chills, will also move into the area for the weekend and the start of the work week, according to the weather service.
