Anita Strange-Rebecchi, whom I call the “Queen of Bronzeville,” is bringing the old time fun, creative juices, and great music back to the community. A longtime resident of Bronzeville, Mrs. Rebecchi started inviting jazz musicians and the community for summer jams and fellowship in her yard on South Indiana. Her gatherings grew in popularity not only because of the great music that was shared, but also the true spirit of community and love that was experienced on those cool summer nights. Now, the new home for Jazzin and Jammin in Bronzeville is at Corpus Christi Hall 4910 S. King Drive all year-round. Anita’s inaugural jazz event featured the hot vibes of Thaddeus Tukes and the house was packed. This is the real Bronzeville, rekindling the spirit of the jazz artists who left their mark on Bronzeville and the world, greats such as Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, and Dizzie Gillepsie, just to name a few. Chicago, with its heart and soul in Bronzeville, was indeed the capital of jazz in the early 20s and after WWII as the Great Migration brought thousands of African Americans from the South to our city. You could find a plethora of clubs and ballrooms throughout Bronzeville and along the famous “Stroll” from 31st to 39th street including the famous Grand Terrace. All this activity slowly disappeared with artists finding new opportunities in New York and L.A. and general economic depression in our inner city. But Bronzeville is coming back and its longtime residents have withered through thick and thin across the years and Jazzin and Jammin in Bronzeville is a true testament of the neighborhood’s vibrancy and soul. Thanks Mrs. Anita for bringing jazz and blues back to the community. Check out Jazzin and Jamming in Bronzeville on Facebook for dates and artists.
