Kenneka Jenkins' Mother Calls For End To Protests At Rosemont Hotel

Tereasa Martin had harsh words for those she said were trying to profit from her grief.

CHICAGO, IL – The mother of Kenneka Jenkins, who was found dead inside a freezer at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont more than two weeks ago, has called for an end to protests outside the hotel. In a Sunday night Facebook Live video, Tereasa Martin criticized some organizers of the demonstrations, which have been calling for "Justice for Kenneka," for seeking to profit financially from the situation.

"The protest is over," Martin said. "They had an agenda in the first place....so I'm ending y'all's agendas, that's not righteous to my child," Martin said. She recently learned that thousands of dollars had been collected as part of the protests over the death of her 19-year-old daughter, she said.

"To sit up here and use my daughter's name in vain, I'm going to pray for y'all's souls," she said. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news for Chicago — or your neighborhood. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)

Martin also announced the details of her daughter's funeral Sunday. It has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the House of Hope, 752 E. 114th St., Chicago, and she invited attendees to wear purple and white.

The investigation into Jenkins' death has attracted immense attention and prompted extensive speculation about a possible cover-up or other foul play involved with her death. Rosemont police are investigating the death and have rejected appeals to the FBI to step in. Rosemont's mayor said rampant online theories about the incident are hampering the investigation.

Jenkins went to the Rosemont hotel on Friday, Sept. 8 to attend a party in a ninth-floor room, travelling from her Near West Side home around 11:30 p.m. that night. When friends couldn't find her after 4 a.m., they contacted her mother.

Jenkins' sister reported her missing Saturday afternoon, and after an 11-hour search, hotel staff found the 19-year-old's body inside a walk-in freezer early Sunday. The medical examiner's office pronounced her dead at 12:48 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10.

Rosemont police have released nine clips of video appearing to show Jenkins walking throughout the Crowne Point on the early morning hours of Sept. 9, although there has been no video of her walking into the freezer where her body was found.
