Learn lifesaving skills during March 20 Stop the Bleed training

Training taught by Advocate Christ Medical Center's trauma team

Oak Lawn, Ill. – Advocate Christ Medical Center’s trauma team will teach the community life-saving emergency skills during a Stop the Bleed training class on Wednesday, March 20.

Trauma Surgeon Dr. James Doherty and Trauma Coordinator Michelle Dace, RN, will host a free, hands-on Stop the Bleed training from 6-8 pm Wednesday, March 20, at the Oak Lawn Public Library, 9427 Raymond Ave., Oak Lawn.

Participants in the class will be taught how best to apply a tourniquet to stop blood flow and how to pack a wound during an emergency. The skills can be applied to any number of situations ranging from a broken bone while hiking to injuries sustained in a car accident.

“Bleeding out is the number one most preventable death in any type of traumatic injury. By securing the bleeding before first responders arrive, bystanders can help stabilize the patient and expedite later life-saving treatment,” said Dr. Doherty.

Stop the Bleed is a national program aimed at training bystanders to respond to emergencies. The program was started by the federal government after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
