Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Affordable housing near Lincoln Square Brown Line, other projects approved by City Council zoning committee. The project at 4715 N. Western Ave. will bring 63 lower-cost apartments to the heart of Lincoln Square while preserving some public parking for nearby businesses. The approval comes after three years of tense community meetings about the project, which will sit directly across from the CTA Brown Line station.
2) 122 candidates will compete for 66 seats on Chicago's new police District Councils. Three districts where crime is surging—Central, Gresham and Shakespeare—don't have the bare minimum number of candidates to fill open seats. They have only two candidates each who filed nominating petitions by the Monday deadline. The ordinance calls for the election of three-member councils in each of Chicago's 22 police districts.
3) Promontory Point supporters push for hearing in front of Chicago Landmark Commission. Preservationists are pushing for Promontory Point, a human-made peninsula that runs from 54th to 56th streets on the lakefront, to be granted Chicago landmark status. If declared a Chicago Landmark, it will be afforded greater protection from potential demolition or alteration. Advocates are requesting to have the matter heard at the Dec. 8 commission meeting.
4) Chicago bartender wins cookbook award for 'Something and Tonic.' Nick Kokonas has won the award for best self-published cookbook from the International Association of Culinary Professionals. He got the idea for "Something and Tonic: A History of the World's Most Iconic Mixer" while working as a beverage director. "It started as a weekly rotating tonic-based cocktail," Kokonas said. But once he started reading the history of tonic, he became obsessed.
5) Lawsuit filed against truck driver over school bus crash involving St. Ignatius hockey team. Sixteen members of Chicago's St. Ignatius College Prep junior varsity hockey team, along with their parents and two coaches, have filed a lawsuit after a semi-truck driver slammed into the school bus they were riding in Indiana earlier this month. The lawsuit names driver Victor Santos and four trucking companies as defendants, accusing them of "negligence and willful and wanton disregard for the safety of the players and coaches aboard the bus."
