CHICAGO – A man died after an exchange of gunfire with Chicago police officers early Wednesday morning in the city's Irving Park neighborhood.

Just after 3 a.m., officers responded to a call of a person with a gun outside a bar in the 3700 block of North Kedzie Avenue. A witness directed officers to a person matching the description, who had ducked down an alley in the 3700 North Troy Avenue. As officers pursued the man, he took out a gun and the man was struck during an exchange of gunfire with police, according to a CPD preliminary statement.

Officers called for an ambulance and the man was pronounced dead on the scene. Police said a handgun with an extended magazine was recovered on the scene. The officers were also transported to an area hospital for observation.

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said at a news conference that the incident unfolded during an argument in front of Christina’s Place, 3759 N. Kedzie Ave. A security guard called police when he saw a man with a gun pointing it at people, Brown said. The man’s age and identity are unknown.

The officers involved were a 12-year officer and a probationary officer, Brown said. Investigators believe both cops discharged their firearms, according to body-cam footage. More security and surveillance video is expected to surface, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
