Michael Cohen's Family Lent At Least $20M To Chicago Cab Owners

Trump lawyer's connections to the Chicago taxicab industry are deeper than previously known, a review of loan records shows.

CHICAGO — A family member of President Donald Trump's embattled personal lawyer and "fixer," Michael D. Cohen, has loaned at least $20 million dollars to the owners of a large fleet of Chicago taxicabs. Cohen's father-in-law, Fima Shusterman, has made eight loans – worth between $20 and $40 million – since last August to Yasya Shtayner and two companies she owns, according to Cook County recorder of deeds records reviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Shtayner and Semyon Shtayner were identified in a warrant obtained by the FBI to search Cohen's home and office, and they own and operate Chicago Medallion Management Corp., which manages 368 taxicabs including 22 owned by Cohen.

In Cook County, the family faces a separate suit, as a credit union run by the League of Mutual Taxi Owners in New York is suing to collect a roughly $3.5 million loan connected to its Chicago operation, according to the Sun-Times.

Cohen also has more than 30 medallions in New York City that were formerly operated by Symon Garber, who reportedly became Chicago's "taxi king" after befriending the son of former Mayor Richard M. Daley more than 15 years ago.
