Monee Man Faces Felony Charge After Punching Chicago Cop In Face: CPD

CHICAGO — A 34-year-old Monee man is due in bond court Thursday after he was charged with aggravated battery in an incident in which police said he approached a Chicago police officer and punched him in the face.

Craig Smart was arrested Tuesday night in the 800 block of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood following the incident, police said. Smart was identified as the person who, moments before, approached an on-duty Chicago police officer and attacked the officer after becoming aggressive, police said.

Smart punched the officer in the face and was arrested minutes later. Police have not provided any more information about the incident or the motive for Smart attacking the police officer.

Smart also faces two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest in the incident, which came four days after an off-duty Chicago police officer was shot in the Beverly neighborhood while trying to break up a fight outside a bar.
