Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Man with ax shot, killed by security guard outside Chicago weed dispensary. A man wielding an ax was shot and killed yesterday by a security guard outside of a Zen Leaf marijuana dispensary in Greektown. Police said the incident happened just after 10 a.m. in the 200 block of South Halsted, when a man got into a verbal altercation outside of the business with a 37-year-old man working security. The man ultimately began swinging an ax at the security guard before striking him in the leg. "A struggle ensued and the victim fired shots, striking the offender," police said in a statement. The man with the ax was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The man working security was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition
2) Chicago Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza joins growing exodus from City Council. Yet another member of the Chicago City Council is leaving her post, as Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza announced that she will not seek reelection next year. In a Facebook post, Garza, who has represented the 10th Ward on Chicago’s Southeast Side since 2015, said that she will not seek a third term in office.Garza defeated incumbent Ald. John Pope by just seven votes to win office during the 2015 election. Her ward includes parts of Hegewisch, Jeffrey Manor, South Chicago and South Deering.
3) Last Call Chicago: New book explores 1001 LGBT-friendly haunts. "Last Call Chicago: A History of 1,001 LGBTQ-Friendly Taverns, Haunts & Hangouts," written by authors Rick Karlin and St. Sukie de la Croix, is a history of LGBTQ venues in Chicago. The book is a walk in time, from the Speakeasies of the 1920s to the latest hot spots, and all done without looking at a single app. The book is currently available for pre-order on the publisher's site. A book release party will take place at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12 at Sidetrack, located at 3349 North Halsted Street.
4) R. Kelly trial on hold after officials close federal courthouse. Chicago’s federal courthouse will be closed today because of an “operational issue,” meaning the trial of R&B superstar R. Kelly will be delayed by at least one day. U.S. District Clerk of Court Thomas Bruton confirmed late Monday the Dirksen Federal Courthouse will be closed, and jury trials will be suspended, on Tuesday. But he did not provide further explanation. There has so far been no indication the closure is related to Kelly’s trial. Still, it is highly unusual for officials to close the courthouse for an entire day on such short notice for reasons unrelated to weather.
5) 140-year-old Pullman House to add coffee shop upon re-opening. The Pullman House at the corner of 111th Street and South Saint Lawrence has been in the Chicago community for more than 140 years. When the mansion reopens sometime next month, it will do so with the Pullman Club Coffee Shop opening inside. A mansion that once belonged to the Pullman Company’s long-time general manager H.H. Sessions, has seen plenty of turnover since its original owner was forced to sell it around the beginning of the 20th century. The mansion had been sitting empty for nearly two decades before restorations recently began. Today, the Pullman House Project is working to restore not only the home, but several others that once made up a town of thousands.
