PetSmart Recalls Canned Dog Food For Metal Contamination

The company says the food could pose a choking risk to dogs.

PetSmart is recalling its Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken & Rice Classic Ground after complaints that the canned food could be contaminated with metal.

The food is sold at PetSmart.com, Pet360.com, PetFoodDirect.com and in PetSmart locations nationwide, according to the FDA.

"This product is being voluntarily recalled as a precautionary measure due to metal contamination that could potentially be a choking hazard to pets," the FDA said.

The product was recalled after the manufacturer received consumer complaints, but no complaints have been received directly by PetSmart, the company said.

The recall affects a single lot of canned dog food sold between Oct. 10, 2016, and Feb. 7, 2017. The affected product is the 13.2 oz canned Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken & Rice Classic Ground with the UPC 7-3725726116-7. The "best by" date on the bottom of the can is 8/5/19 and the lot number is 1759338.

PetSmart said it is not aware of any reports of illness or injury related to the food.

Customers who purchased the recalled food should stop feeding it to pets and bring any remaining cans to their local PetSmart store for a full refund or exchange.
