As the baby boomer generation continues to age, we’re faced with the increased need for healthcare services and resources to ensure the elderly population remains healthy and active. Healthcare has become and will continue to be a center piece of the economy by providing multiple job opportunities for professionals. Many college students and recent graduates look to professions such as physical therapy for a rewarding career.
Students hoping to find a balance of both worlds should consider a career in physical therapy. CareerCast recently ranked PT as one of the most in-demand jobs this year. Further, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates physical and occupational therapist careers will grow by 34% and 27% respectively from 2014 – 2024.
John Sauer, physical therapist at the LaGrange Park Athletico Physical Therapy clinic, isn’t surprised by these statistics. In fact, since the first of the year, Athletico Physical Therapy has increased its workforce by 28% and over the past three years the company has tripled in size.

Sauer, like most millennials attracted to the profession, chose to study physical therapy for its strong employment demand and the rewarding opportunity to help patients live healthier, happier lives. Studies show young people care more about a work/life balance than any generation and a PT career offers flexibility.
“One of the best things about being a physical therapist is the opportunity to work hands-on with patients to help them meet their goals and return to their normal activities or sport”, Sauer says. Sauer enjoys working at Athletico for the multitude of career development opportunities provided to employees including mentorship, leadership programs, continuing education classes and programs focused on specific patient populations and diagnoses. Outside the clinic, Sauer is involved in research with local high school track and cross country teams exploring the correlation between injury rates and peak tibial impact force. He also oversees events, education, and meetings for Athletico's Endurance Program in Illinois.
