Police Shoot Man In Finger After He Shoots Neighbor: CPD
Chicago police said a "myriad" of deescalation tactics" were used to get the man to drop his guns when he started shooting at his neighbors.

CHICAGO — A 52-year-old man who fired several rounds at his neighbors, hitting one of them, was taken into custody Monday evening after Chicago police shot him in the finger, CPD Deputy Chief Sean Longhran said at a news conference.
Police said the man evidently exited his residence in the 100 block of 26th Place several times armed with a shotgun and a revolver, and started shooting at his neighbors, striking one who was outside working on his vehicle.
Those police officers arriving on the scene saw the man armed with a revolver, the deputy chief said.

“The engaged him and used a myriad of deescalation tactics, including begging for the offender to stop the weapon. That was unsuccessful, and he would not comply,” Longhran said. “The man walked away and engaged other officers, who also used deescalation tactics.”
The man pointed the weapon at an uninvolved citizen and menaced the citizen, the deputy chief said, and officers were forced to shoot the man. The man was struck in the finger and removed from the scene with a non-life threatening wound.

The neighbor who was hit by gunfire was undergoing surgery at Advocate Aurora Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Police recovered two weapons at the scene, including a revolver and shotgun. The Area 2 Investigative Response Team and COPA are investigating. Longhran said evidence is being collected from body-worn cameras and private video.
Longhran was unaware exactly how many shots the man is alleged to have shot at his neighbors. Two officers are believed to have fired their weapons at the man.
The neighbor who was struck by gunfire is currently undergoing surgery at Advocate Aurora Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Longhran did not believe there was any reason why the neighbor was targeted. Other neighbors who were shot at just happened on the scene.
The deputy chief could comment on how many the neighbor may have fired, noting that the investigation was still very preliminary.
The officers are being placed on 30-day administrative leave, “only for the purpose of allowing them to be off the street for this very stressful situation.”
The motive is unknown at this time.
