Rain, Ice, Snow? Winter Weather Approaches Chicago Area

Uncertainty remains on the track of the storm, as well as about how much snow will fall, according to the weather service.

ILLINOIS — Winter weather is once again in the cards for the Chicago area as rain, freezing rain and snow are all possible with a weather system approaching the area Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

On Wednesday, temps in the 50s are forecast and widespread rain is expected, the weather service said. Heavy rainfall amounts could lead to ice jams and poorly draining flooding on Wednesday night, according to the weather service.

Portions of the area could see rainfall of 1 to 2 inches, the weather service said.

Rain will change to a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet late Wednesday, which could lead to ice accumulations and slick roads, the weather service said.

On Thursday, the wintry mix will change to snow, with several inches of accumulation possible for portions of the area. There is a much lower confidence on the Thursday portion of the forecast, the weather service said.
