Record 9K Athletes Compete In Chicago Triathlon Weekend

CHICAGO — More than 9,000 athletes took part in this year's Supertri Chicago race weekend, setting a new participation record for the event formerly known as the Chicago Triathlon.

Organizers said the field was the largest in event history and included athletes from all 50 states and 32 countries.

Illinois accounted for the vast majority of participants, with more than 6,900 athletes from the state constituting about 79 percent of the field.

Competitors ranged in age from 7 to 89.

Multiple Races Along The Lakefront

The weekend began Saturday with the Kids Tri, followed by the Supersprint Race, which organizers positioned as a shorter-distance option for first-time participants and athletes looking for a more accessible format.

Sunday featured the Sprint, Olympic and Relay races, sending thousands of competitors through downtown Chicago and along the lakefront.

Supertri said the mix of races was designed to accommodate everyone from young athletes and first-time triathletes to more experienced competitors.

"Chicago is an incredible city for triathlon, and this year's record numbers showed just how much this event means to athletes here at home and around the world," Supertri CEO and co-founder Michael D’hulst said.

More Than $122K Raised For Lurie Children’s

The weekend also included the Supertri Corporate Challenge, which raised more than $122,000 for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Organizers said the money will support pediatric cancer and blood disorder research.

D'hulst said the weekend's mix of first-time racers, young athletes and seasoned competitors reflected the broader goal of bringing people together through the sport.

Registration Open For 2027

Registration is already open for the 2027 Supertri Chicago, scheduled for Aug. 21-22, 2027.
