Rep. Luis Gutierrez Eyes 2020 Presidential Run

The congressman said his plans are in the earliest stages.

CHICAGO, IL — Rep. Luis Gutierrez announced Tuesday that he does not plan to seek re-election to Congress, but according to several reports, he may have his sights set on the presidency. Gutierrez emphasized during a press conference Tuesday that he's not "retiring" and will continue his fight for equality and just immigration laws. The 63-year-old lawmaker has represented Illinois' 4th congressional district since 1993.

"I'm not going to rule out any future office," Gutierrez told reporters during the media conference. "I'm not leaving. I want to engage."

Gutierrez has been a leader in challenging President Donald Trump's immigration orders and pushing for federal aid to help rebuild hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.

When asked about whether he's planning a 2020 presidential run in an interview with POLITICO Wednesday, Gutierrez said he plans take the steps to guarantee Federal Election Commission regulations about campaign rules and financing. He emphasized that his plans are barely off the ground.

"I haven't even talked to somebody about how you do this. I don't even have a lawyer," Gutierrez told POLITICO.
