RMU Illinois Students Combine Internships and Study Abroad

"It's Transformational!"

Those are the words of Robert Morris University Illinois students who have taken the advantage of the University's study abroad program. Depending on their majors, students have journeyed to England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Taiwan and France. For each student, the program has given them an experience unlike any other. They have the opportunity to study in a different country and take in all that a new land has to offer: the culture, landscape, language, food, styles, business practices, customs - and of course, the people.

A number of RMU students are completing an internship this summer in Asia. Accompanied by RMU art and design professor, Dr. Mei-Fen Chen, the graphic design students completed their 2018 International Internships at Formosa Plastic Group Design Center in Taipei. "It has been a rich, cross-cultural experience," said Dr. Chen. They worked on design projects as part of an international team and presented their results to a panel of professionals.

According to research by IES (International Education of Students) Abroad, using a college semester or quarter to study abroad positively and unequivocally influences the career path, world view and self confidence of students. These RMU students have increased the value of their experience by combining their class and travel time with an internship, adding significantly to their resumes before graduating.

At least one internship is a requirement for graduation at Robert Morris, and the administration continuously promotes the study abroad program to complement the college experience. Business professor Dr. Robert Tenuta often accompanies students to the program in London, England. "Every student has been enriched by studying in a different country. For many, it is the first time they have traveled outside the United States," he said. "They return with a new, different and often broader perspective of people as citizens, excited by all they experienced, and they encourage their fellow classmates to consider study abroad while in school."
