CHICAGO — Following a smash hit run in Europe, "Bernadette, The Musical" is set to make its premiere in the United States. The production opens Thursday at Chicago's Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture, and will run locally through March 15.

"Bernadette, The Musical" tells the true story of Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old from Massabielle, Lourdes, in 19th century France. Soubirous, the daughter of a miller, claimed to have seen a vision of "something white in the shape of a lady" in 1858 while at a grotto on the riverbank. This initial vision left her with feelings of peace, serenity, and love. The musical focuses on the subsequent weeks where she experienced 16 more visions.

The story depicts an uneducated farm girl visited by a mysterious lady visible only to her, setting off events that spread throughout the population and the press. Today, the site of the visions is visited by millions annually.
