CHICAGO AREA, IL — Waves of snow showers and snow squalls are in the forecast this Halloween, which could make for less-than-ideal conditions while trick-or-treating.

A mix of gusty winds and snow showers are in the forecast for the Chicago area from 10 a.m. Tuesday through this afternoon. This could lead to a sharp drop in visibility, according to National Weather Service officials.

Temperatures are expected to warm above freezing for most of the area — so any slushy accumulations will likely remain on grassy surfaces —but icy road surfaces have also been reported in some portions of the Chicago area as of 10 a.m. In Lake County, the sheriff's office warned bridges across the county have become very icy from snowfall.

"Please use caution when driving, several crashes have been reported," officials with the Lake County Sheriff's Office said in a Tuesday morning Facebook post.

A final burst of snow is possible across northeast Illinois between 5 and 10 p.m. Tuesday evening. Snowfall rates near one inch per hour are possible, which could lead to snow-coated roads during the evening commute. The snow should end for most across Chicagoland by early evening.

During the prime trick-or-treating hours Tuesday afternoon and evening, temperatures will hover around the freezing mark — between 30 and 36 degrees. Wind gusts between 15 and 35 mph are in the forecast and the wind chill could make temps feel much cooler — between 18 to 27 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather officials are urging all who are heading out to trick-or-treat to bundle up and to use caution while driving.
