Sox Ace Chris Sale Suspended 5 Games for Clubhouse Cut-Up Incident

Sources say Sale was upset about 1976 throwback jerseys the team was assigned to wear for Saturday's game so he sliced them up with a knife.

Chicago, IL -- A reported cut-up escapade in the locker room before the White Sox-Tigers game on Saturday has landed Sox pitcher Chris Sale on the suspension list.

White Sox GM Rick Hahn issued a statement Sunday saying that management concluded its “internal investigation” after Sale reportedly sliced up throwback issued the team was assigned to wear for the previous night’s game.

“Chris has been suspended for violating team rules, for insubordination and for destroying team equipment. While we all appreciate Chris’ talent and passion, there is a correct way and an incorrect way to express concerns about team rules and organizational expectations.”

Hahn also said Sale was fined an undisclosed amount and has been placed on Major League Baseball’s suspended list.

Word leaked out Saturday that Sale was scratched from lineup and being sent home due to a “clubhouse incident” prior to the game, described by management as “non-physical” in nature.

“Sale cut up some throwback uniforms with a knife after getting into a heated argument with the front office about not wanting to wear the uniforms Saturday. The left-hander is tentatively slated to rejoin the White Sox' rotation on Thursday against the Cubs. General manager Rick Hahn said that the incident won't affect the club's decision on whether to trade the lefty or not, although that could just be GM speak,” reported the fantasy baseball site Rotoworld.

The Sox ace was apparently upset about the 1976 throwback jerseys players for a were assigned to wear for in conjunction with a promotional giveaway at the park.

MLB writer Ken Rosenthal tweeted that Sale asked that players not wear the throwbacks on his night to pitch because they were uncomfortable. "Things escalated when they wouldn't relent.”

Anthony Ranaudo has been recalled from AAA Charlotte to take Sale’s place in the rotation.

Sale's name has bandied about for a possible trade before MLB's Aug. 1 deadline. Meanwhile, Sale’s rant lit up Twitter with numerous Edward Scissorhands statements.
