'As Sure As God Made Green Apples,' the Cubs Are in the World Series Today
Harry Caray's promise fulfilled 25 years after memorable edict.

CHICAGO, IL - Few broadcasters in any sport are remembered as fondly as Harry Caray.
Though the 'Mayor of Rush Street' actually was with the St. Louis Cardinals for a longer period of time, most everyone remembers him most for his last 15 years on the North Side calling games for the Chicago Cubs.
While there have been several memorable broadcasts, this one that ended the 1991 season has re-surfaced several times recently. This is when he uttered the iconic line "as sure as God made green apples," the Chicago Cubs will make it to the World Series.

Caray was right about the Cubs eventually making it to the World Series. But in the video he is not thinking 2016. When he says "and it may be sooner" than you'd think, he likely figured 1992, 1993 or 1994.
But Greg Maddux, the winning pitcher for the Cubs that day left soon after for the Atlanta Braves and the Cubs wiggled around in mediocrity for the next two-and-a-half decades.

Caray, who died just weeks before a memorable Cubs season in 1998, is buried in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines. This week, some fans have stopped by his grave to leave Cubs gear, a pennant and yes, green apples.
Because today is the day. The day he was talking about in the video.
Watching this video is more of a way to bring back Harry, one of our childhood friends, than to serve as a remarkable prediction. His stumbling over words and referring to the St. Louis Cardinals as the "Mets" could only make a Cubs fan smile and wish Harry were here to call the game in Cleveland tonight.
And somewhere, alongside Jack Brickhouse, he is.
