Temps In The 80s, Drier Weather To End August For Illinois

The Chicago area will get a break from the heat and humidity this week, as conditions are expected to be cooler and less humid.

ILLINOIS — After several days of hot and humid weather, temperatures will start to cool this week, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service said the end of August will also feature drier weather, with only a small chance of a stray shower on Monday and Tuesday, mainly south of Interstate 80.

Monday will have a high of 86, Tuesday a high of 83 and Wednesday a high of 82 degrees. There will also be a high swim risk on Lake Michigan beaches on Wednesday, due to northeast winds building waves, according to the weather service.

Thursday will have a high of 82, and Friday a high of 80 to close out the first few days of September, according to the weather service forecast.

According to the weather service, the more comfortable temperatures come as dew point values start to lower. A dew point measures the atmospheric moisture, and a dew point between 70 and 75 feels very humid, while a dew point greater than 75 degrees feels "oppressive," the weather service said.

Between Aug. 7 and Aug. 29, 19 days had dew points higher than 70 degrees, according to the weather service. These elevated dew points are also an ingredient for thunderstorms, which have been common throughout August.
