Weather in Chicago: Thunderstorms Possible Sunday Night, Monday

A look ahead to this week's weather forecast

The Chicago area will see a warm and windy start to the week with thunderstorms possible Sunday night and again on Monday. High temps are expected to reach the lower- to mid-70s on Monday, after much of the same on Sunday, and wind gust up to 30 mph are also in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a 20 to 30 percent chance for thunderstorms west of Interstate 55 on Sunday and a 30 to 50 percent chance of thunderstorms of thunderstorms on Monday. The storms Monday are most likely east of Interstate 55.

The thunderstorms on Sunday night are expected mainly after midnight while Monday could see a chance of some thunderstorms and showers in the morning with storms likely in the afternoon. Some of those storms could be severe with potential hazards being strong wind gusts, hail and frequent lightning, according to the National Weather Service. The storms could continue into Monday evening.

The rest of the week is looking to be dry with high temps in the 50s and 60s.

  • Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Lows around 60. South winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
  • Monday: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, then showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. Breezy. Highs in the lower 70s. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
  • Monday Night: Partly cloudy. A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Lows in the lower 40s. West winds 10 to 20 mph.
  • Tuesday: Partly sunny. Highs in the lower 50s. West winds 10 to 15 mph.
  • Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy in the evening then clearing. Lows in the upper 30s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Highs in the upper 50s inland...but only in the lower 50s near the lake.
  • Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy. A 30 percent chance of showers after midnight. Lows in the mid 40s.
  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers. Highs around 60.
  • Thursday Night And Friday: Partly cloudy. Lows in the lower 40s. Highs around 60.
